The North American Prairie is a complex eco-system containing many different ad diverse forbs (flowers) and grasses. When mature, the prairie is a stable, conservative community comprised of perennial plants that resist invasion by most trees and weeds. Because the plants in the prairie community have unusually deep roots, these roots replenish the soil with organic matter, open up the subsoil to aeration and water percolation, and increases the overall health of the land. Native Plants are vigorous and are exceptionally hardy, enduring large temperate swings, strong winds, periodic droughts, and severe winter weather.

When planted in an eco-system, fewer insects and diseases plague these plants. They are usually long-lived perennials with some self seeding annuals and biennials. Once established, these plants are maintained with little effort.
